Last winter, doctors told Shad Mayfield he needed surgery to repair a torn labrum in each hip. He elected not to do it, and then won Fort Worth a few weeks later.

He went on to amass a PRCA-record $286,347 in the regular season, win the All-Around Gold Buckle and finish second in the tie-down roping.

Along the way, he had to learn how to balance the pain he was going through, which crested in Cheyenne, a rodeo that he won.

“Ty Harris was knocking at my door and I’m not the type of guy that likes falling in the standings,” Mayfield said on Cowboy Lore.

There’s a number of reasons he does not want to have surgery, so in November, he went to Mexico for stem cell treatment on his hips, and that may help him hold out for an additional two years.

A year later, Mayfield still has not had the  surgery. He says he will one day, but when the time is right.

“People don’t understand, I have to do both my hips, it’s a big process for recovery,” he said. “I’ll be out anywhere from six to eight months. I don’t think the people sitting at home are gonna come pay my bills while I’m out for eight months. So I’ve been setting myself up to be ready to be out for eight months and be comfortable.”
