“Championship Monday” isn’t a phrase heard often in ProRodeo, but when it’s tied to Ellensburg’s Labor Day tradition, it sparks something in every competitor. Labor Day signals that the season’s end is near.

To get things started on Championship Monday, it was a three-way tie in the bareback riding between a trio of cowboys in the Top 5 in the World Standings. Cole Franks rallied from the middle of the pack with a 90.5-point ride on Disco Party to set the arena record and end up at 172 points on two along with World No. 2 Bradlee Miller and World No. 3 Jess Pope. Pope was the highest earner of the bunch at $8,850.

Reigning World Champion JD Struxness captured the steer wrestling title for the third time in four years with an aggregate time of 13.3 seconds on three head. He finished a commanding 1.2 seconds ahead of runner-up Dakota Eldridge, who had won the event last year with a 13.3 of his own.

In team roping, JC Yeahquo/Ross Ashford were 5.0 and 4.9 seconds on their last two runs, taking second in Round 2 and first in the Finals to run away with the Average title at 16.4 seconds on three. It was the pair’s first win as partners and they are No. 17 and No. 19 in the World respectively.

Damian Brennan was similarly dominant in the saddle bronc riding, picking up his fifth Playoff Series win of the Summer Run with a first place finish in the Long Round and second place finish in the Short Round. He was 174.5 points on two and is up to No. 2 in the World Standings.

“This is a rodeo we all look forward to coming to at the end of the year,” he said. “It’s definitely a bucket list win, so I’m pretty pumped…They pack the stands every day for us.”

With a 9.1 in the Finals, Cole Clemons won the Average in the tie-down roping at 27.4 seconds on three and jumped from No. 25 and No. 20 in the World Standings as the 21-year-old hopes to make a late charge to a second straight National Finals. He was better than a pair of World Champions, Riley Webb and Marcos Costa, who tied for second at 28 flat on three.

In breakaway roping, Beau Peterson and Martha Angelone tied at 8.3 seconds on three, which was 1.2 seconds better than the closest cowgirl. Angelone was 2.5 in the Finals and Peterson was 2.9.

Summer Kosel got a clutch win in the barrel racing that may have her back on the right side of the bubble. She entered the Short Round No. 18 in the World after placing in each of the first two rounds in Ellensburg and then made a 16.99-second run to clinch the Average win and bring in $6,262 total for the weekend.

“I just give everything to god, try to stay out of Apollo’s way and let it roll,” she said.

In bull riding, 19-year-old Hudson Bolton got his first win outside of New York and New Jersey, which is something you don’t often hear in ProRodeo. He was 172.5 points on two and was the best of the three who made the whistle in the Short Round with 88 points. He is up to No. 10 in the World Standings.

“I knew I needed a big win to punch my ticket and this is my first major win,” he said. “The crowd is amazing at this rodeo, it just pumps you up and makes you ride better.”

QUICK DRAW

Jess Pope has won a check 27 of the 29 rodeos he has been to during the Summer Run.

JD Struxness has been 5.1 or faster on each of his last seven runs.

Damian Brennan has moved up to No. 2 from No. 14 since beginning of the Summer Run.

Hudson Bolton is now No. 1 in the Resistol Rookie race attempting to become the first bull rider ever to win PRCA and PBR Rookie of the Year in the same season.
