Douglas County Fair and Rodeo Recap: Veterans Push for Vegas While a Teenager Turns Heads in ProRodeo

Over its three performances in three days, the reigning Mountain State Circuit Large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year paid out over $300,000.

RC Landingham Keeps Pace in NFR Race

Landingham is not a bareback rider that watches the standings and right now, that’s probably a good thing because after his Douglas County win he finds himself just barely on the right side of the Top 15 at No. 14 in the PRCA World Standings.

His 89-point ride on Arctic Valley of Kirsten Vold matches his second-highest marked ride of the season.

“(Arctic Valley had) a lot of lead changes and swoops back and forth which raised his score and I was just fortunate enough to match him,” Landingham said.

For the time being, he just wants to get on good horses, do the best he can and let the chips fall where they may.

“I’ve been on the bubble so many times it doesn’t bother me,” he said, “I’m just out here trying to make the most of every ride and I’ll be happy with the outcome either way, I’ve made my mark and have nothing to prove to anyone. Of course, I hope to make the NFR for the sixth time and that was I aim to do, but the situation will not affect the way I perform one the next two months.”

Kyle Irwin Wins Tight Steer Wrestling with 3.4-Second Run

The Alabama native has now gotten his last two wins at high paying rodeos in Colorado, he followed his NFR Open victory last month by going 3.4 for the second time this season to win in Castle Rock over the weekend.

He bested a leaderboard that had 10 times of 4 flat or faster.

“The rumor was it going to best and in slack we saw a 3.5, so I knew it was going to be salty,” he said. “I had a phenomenal steer drawn and was confident in the horse I was riding…Rodeos like that make you take a shot and hope it all lies up, and that time it did.”

The win, which paid $5,686, continued a surge up the PRCA World Standings for Irwin. He has gone from No. 29 to No. 12 since July 1 and now his first NFR since 2022 and seventh of his career is well within reach.

“I try not to overthink it, I’ve got a number in mind I want to reach by the end of the season and that’s what I focus on,” he said. “The standings change every week, and while that’s good for the drama, that’s one less thing I need to worry about.”

19-Year-Old Hayden Welsh Continues to Make His Mark on ProRodeo

Welsh, who won two rounds at the CNFR in June, has been terrific in ProRodeo since then.

He was 89 points in Douglas County and fared well at another Playoff Series Rodeo as well, tying for third in Dodge City with 85.

“The first jumps he really wanted to pull me down in his head and I just kept sitting up and saying loose,” he said of his winning ride. “After I got sat up and found my seat on him, it was just fun from there, even got to open up and spur him a little bit.”

In recent weeks, he has also won the Kit Carson Pro Rodeo with 88 points and covered Korkow’s Salinas for 90.5 in Cheyenne.

Since July 5, Welsh has ridden 12-of-25 bulls.

“It’s been a blessing to be able to call these guys I look up to my friends and to be competing with them is a big confidence boost,” he said. “My dad was seven-time NFR qualifier so I was known by that, but it’s been good to establish myself and have people asking my dad if I’m his boy.”

The other winners in Castle Rock, Colorado were Dustin Egusquiza/JC Flake and JC Yeahquo/Ross Ashford in team roping (4.1 seconds), Zeke Thurston in the bronc riding (92.5 points), Ty Harris in tie-down roping (7.7 seconds), and Jodee Miller in barrel racing (16.82 seconds).
