Jayco Roper knows this is time of the year to hit the gas and while the No. 9 ranked bareback rider in the World said he was excited to play in the mud in the Short Round Sunday afternoon, he was happy to be named the champion of the rain-shortened Dodge City Roundup for his 88.5-point ride on Ranch & Co Time of Championship Pro Rodeo.

“I didn’t know too much about the horse I was getting on,” he said. “But he had an outstanding trip with me.”

The win paid Roper $7,544 and carried his momentum from July, when he won close to $50,000. Not much changed for the Oklahoma native between last month and the rest of the season for Roper other than some standard things that would help any bareback rider: he got healed up and switched to a different riggin.

Two more good months and the 24-year-old is well on his way to his second National Finals Rodeo.

(I’m) just going to keep nodding for first, now is the time in the season to stay locked in,” he said. “The race is almost over and I can the Thomas & Mack from here.”

In steer wrestling, Tyler Waguespack continued his climb up the World Standings by winning with an aggregate time of 7.7 seconds on two to win by two-tenths, in team roping Cyle Denison/Lane Mitchell had a close call of their own, finishing ahead of Cory Kidd V/Will Woodfin by one-tenth in the Average.

In the other two roughstcok events, Shorty Garrett, Ryder Sanford, and Tom Webster split the title with 85.5 apiece in the bronc riding, where there were also three cowboys marked 85 points. It was a similar story in the bull riding as well as Kody Aldrich and Nash Jones were also deadlocked at 85.5.

In barrel racing, Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi got within $10,000 of Kassie Mowry in the WPRA World Standings by getting her second win in Dodge City in the last three years. Breakaway roping went to Beau Peterson with a 6.1-second time on two.
