FORT WORTH, TEXAS – At the 85th iteration of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Stockyards Showcase inside the iconic Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas, Lucas Martins Costa (Frutal, Brazil) went a perfect 2-for-2 to win the event title.
In the opening round, Costa stormed out of the chutes for 85.5 points aboard Elkins 133 (Philip Elkins).
After finishing second in Round 1, the Brazilian catapulted to the top of the leaderboard by covering Cowtown Special (Stockyards Pro Rodeo) for another 85.5 points in the final round.
The flawless performance netted Costa 59 Velocity Global points.
In second place was Jean Carlos de Souza (Mirante Do Paranapanema, Brazil).
Starting strong, Souza won the first round by riding Elkins 122 (Philip Elkins) for an event-high 86.5 points.
Looking to maintain his spot atop the standings, Souza took on Zebulon (Stockyards Pro Rodeo) as his final animal athlete opponent, but he was bested in a blistering 1.28 seconds.
The 1-for-2 performance garnered Souza 36 Velocity Global points.
The final spot on the podium belonged to Leandro Zampollo (Pirassununga, Brazil).
Zampollo rode Elkins 973 (Philip Elkins) for 85 points in Round 1 but was dispatched by Elkins 737 (Philip Elkins) in 5.43 seconds in the final round to finish third.
The bronze finish gained Zampollo 22 Velocity Global points.
Rounding out the Top 5 was a three-way tie between Manoelito de Souza Junior (Itamira, Brazil), Jean Fernandes Pereira (Crixas, Brazil), and Guilherme Valleiras (Pirassununga, Brazil), who all went 1-for-2.
Souza topped Elkins 140 (Philip Elkins) for 84.5 points in Round 1 but was quickly unseated by Elkins 800 (Philip Elkins) in just 1.24 seconds in Round 2.
Matching his fellow Brazilians, Pereira made the 8 atop Jeffrey (Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls) for 84.5 points in Round 1 before bucking off Problem Child (Bierema Rodeo Inc./Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls) in 4.12 seconds in Round 2.
Valleiras converted for 84.5 points on Wreck Shop (Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls) in the opening round but couldn’t separate himself from the three-way tie in the final round, bucking off Ghost Face (Bierema Rodeo Inc./Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls) in 2.94 seconds in his final out.
All three cowboys left Cowtown Coliseum with 15.3 Velocity Global points.
Velocity Global points contribute to the Velocity Global Standings and determine which new riders are added to the elite Unleash The Beast throughout the season. The Top 3 Velocity Global riders who have not already qualified are also invited to the PBR World Finals in May.
In the bull pen, OCD (Cooper/Scruggs Bucking Bulls) and the aforementioned Ghost Face were both marked 44.5 points to split the Bull of the Event title.
The PBR Stockyards Showcase returns on Thursday, January 2. Action inside Cowtown Coliseum will get underway at 7:30 p.m. CT.
