Monday Notebook, Aug. 18: Wells Shines at Xtreme Broncs Finale; Hamilton, Pope Keep Rolling
Saddle bronc rider Brody Wells has been the fastest riser in ProRodeo since the beginning of August as he followed up his three-win weekend with what may have been the biggest win of his career.
With the best of the best all in one place, Wells swept the Xtreme Broncs Finale in style and moved into the Top 5 in the World Standings for the first time this season.
Meanwhile, two other roughstock cowboys have been getting it done with a little less pop, but the same consistency we have grown accustom to from them. Jess Pope, the 2022 PRCA Bareback Riding World Champion, continues to ride everything while 2023 PRCA Bull Riding World Champion Ky Hamilton also continues to peak at the right time.
Every dollar in every event will only get more and more important as there are only 43 days remaining in the regular season. Here’s everything you need to know from last week…
Brody Wells makes two 90+ Point Rides to sweep Xtreme Broncs Finals and win almost $38,000. Wells moved up from No. 11 to No. 7 in the second weekend of August and after his biggest weekend of the season, he is now No. 4 in the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings. The 24-year-old rode Damaged Goods for 92 and Freckles for 91 to sweet the Xtreme Broncs Finale in Rapid City with a total of 183 points on two, putting him six points clear of Zac Dallas in the Average. In August, Wells has made four 90+ Point Rides and is averaging 88.4 points per ride.
Steer wrestler Holden Myers gets back in NFR contention with win at Caldwell Night Rodeo. Myers had only gone down in the World Standings since rising to No. 3 after a runner-up finish in Houston in March and after slipping all the way to No. 20, he decided enough is enough. The 26-year-old got his quest for his first NFR appearance back on track over the weekend by winning the Caldwell Night Rodeo to move back to No. 15 in the World Standings. He finished second in both rounds there with runs of 4.0 and 4.1 seconds and banked $10,962 total. Stetson Wright matches his dad’s arena record to win Gooding Pro Rodeo. Wright continued his red-hot saddle bronc riding run by going 90 on Summit Pro Rodeo’s Cowboy Fool to get his fourth win this month. In August, he has made rides of 91, 89.5, 90, and 88.5 points in the bronc riding. Will Lummus backs up No. 1 ranking in steer wrestling with a pair of second place finishes. After finally chasing down Tucker Allen, Lummus extended his lead in the World Standings to $12,000 by making a 3.6-second run in Gooding and a 3.8-second run in Burley, Idaho, which combined to pay $7,000. Lummus has made eight runs faster than 4.8 seconds already in August. Bareback rider Jess Pope makes it 17 straight rides of at least 84 points as he moves to No. 3 in the PRCA World Standings. It was another rock-solid weekend for Pope, who placed at four rodeos last weekend with rides marked between 86 and 89 points. This weekend, he was just 86, doing so twice in Gooding and Canby. Since July 23, he has moved up three spots in the World Standings. Ky Hamilton has $11,000 for win in Gooding and second place at Cassia County Fair. The 2023 PRCA World Champion was 2-for-3 on the weekend and made both his qualified rides count. He won $4,939 for an 83-pointer in Burley and was the champion in Gooding with 87.5. He is 5-for-8 with five Top 3 finishes over the last two weekends. Top 2 tie-down ropers Riley Webb and Shad Mayfield trade wins in Idaho. Webb kept his lead at about $20,000 as both cowboys continued their terrific seasons over the weekend. Webb, the No. 1 man in the World, was 7.4 to win Gooding while Mayfield split the title in Caldwell with Hayden Ford at 17.6 seconds on two. No. 2 saddle bronc rider Dawson Hay places at four rodeos to push season earnings over $220,000. After spending most of the summer rodeoing in Canada, Hay made sure fans in the States didn’t forget about him. He won at least $1,500 at four different rodeos, including more than $3,600 in Canby, Baker, Montana, and Rapid City. On the five horses he got on, he averaged 87.8 points.
