Monday Notebook, Aug. 25: Lummus Delivers Again, Calgary Stampede Team Roping Brings Standings Shakeup and More

Two of the summer’s biggest stars, Will Lummus and Jess Pope, kept their momentum rolling, while more than a month after the Calgary Stampede, its team roping portion gave us a new No. 1 and several veteran pairs all but secured their NFR berths.

On top of that, it was another weekend featuring three Playoff Series Rodeos, each paying out more than $230,000.

Will Lummus continues to backup No. 1 steer wrestling ranking with another PRCA Playoff Series win. Since overtaking Tucker Allen for the top spot, Lummus has been terrific. He finished second in the Gooding Pro Rodeo and Cassia County Fair and Rodeo on Aug. 16 and followed it over the weekend with three runs of 4.6 or faster to win the Horse Heaven Roundup, which paid him over $10,000. For good measure, he also cashed at the Gem State Stampede with a 4.5 to extend his lead to $20,000.

Top-ranked bareback rider Rocker Steiner grabs win of his own at Golden Spike Rodeo. It has been a pretty light August schedule for Steiner, who has only been to six rodeos this month. He has, however, won half of them following an 88-point ride on War Widow at the Golden Spike Rodeo. That gives him 14 wins on the season and a lead of $66,000 in the PRCA World Standings.

Calgary Stampede Team Roping provides World Standings shakeup. There’s a new No. 1 on the heel side after Shay Dixon Carrol/Levi Lord won over $14,000 north of the border for their third place finish. It moved Lord about $11,000 ahead of Colter Todd. The two teams that finished ahead of them, Andrew Ward/Jake Long and Clint Summers/Jade Corkill are now No. 7 and 6 in the World on their respective sides. Ward/Long started the weekend on the bubble and are safely in the National Finals for the time being.

Wrights take two of three Playoff Series saddle bronc riding wins over the weekend. Statler was victorious at the Golden Spike Rodeo with 89 points on Kowkow’s Jingle Jeans while Stetson was the champ at the Golden Spike Rodeo (and also split second in Tremonton). They are currently No. 10 and No. 9 in the World respectively, with Stetson up six spots since Aug. 1.

19-year-old Buck Calhoun gets within on spot of first NFR. The Richards, Texas native has quietly been stacking money all summer and if he hasn’t been on the NFR radar before, he certainly is now. With a 7.5 to win the Golden Spike Rodeo, he now sits No. 16 in the World, about $2,000 behind Tuf Cooper for the final spot in Las Vegas. This month, Calhoun has Laso won the Omak Stampede and taken second at the Cassia County Fair with runs of 7.6 and 7.8 seconds. He started the Summer Run No. 31.

Jess Pope closes in on No. 2 spot in PRCA Bareback Riding World Standings after big weekend in Washington. Pope has been chipping away all summer, cashing at all but two rodeos he has entered since June 19. Over the weekend, he won the Kitsap Stampede with 87.5 points on Tator Tot and added to it with a second place finish in the Average at the Horse Heaven Roundup, which included him going 90 on Born Fearless in the Short Round. All told, it was $10,852 weekend for him and it brought his season earnings to $171,515, about $1,000 behind World No. 2 Bradlee Miller. Pope started the Summer Run at No. 7.

Steer wrestler Rowdy Parrott makes fastest run of season to win Golden Spike Rodeo. Parrott’s best time in a summer that has seen him rise to No. 4 in the World Standings came in Tremonton when he was 3.2 to cash $4,671 for victory. He hit that mark twice over the weekend actually, winning Round 1 of Kennewick with another 3.2.
