Monday Notebook, July 14: Calgary Brings Sudden Changes to the PRCA World Standings
By now you’ve probably heard that 80 percent of the money at this year’s money from The Calgary Stampede counted toward the PRCA World Standings, a significant jump from recent years. That, of course, delivered plenty of new No. 1s and fast risers, while some also made waves at the NFR Open or Sheridan WYO Rodeo.
Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield flips script, takes back No. 1 from Riley Webb with 6.8 to win Calgary. Mayfield has won many prestigious rodeos, just about all of them actually, but the win in Calgary may just be the biggest of his career. On July 1, Webb lead Mayfield by $24,000, but he has piled on the money ever since, adding nearly $80,000 to his season earnings to bring his total $188,942. Mayfield now leads Webb by $3,000 and World No. 3 John Douch by $76,000. Bareback rider Rocker Steiner takes No. 1 spot from Bradlee Miller despite not advancing in Calgary. Steiner may not have gotten out of Pool B, but he did cash in all three rounds to make $6,600 toward the World Standings. He also added $5,500 for a second place finish at the Sheridan WYO Rodeo and $3,400 for first at the Laramie Jubilee Days. Steiner has earned $179,173 on the year. For the second time since semi-retiring, steer wrestler Scott Guenthner is in position to accidentally make the NFR. The 33-year-old Alberta native has been semi-retired and only rodeoing close to home over the last three years to spend more time with his family. He keeps winning too much money, however. This same weekend last year, he won $13,000 at the NFR Open, while this year the prize was even bigger. He grabbed his second Calgary Stampede title in the last there years and went from outside the Top 40 to No. 10 in the World with his victory. We will likely see him in Las Vegas for the sixth time in his career. Dustin Egusquiza/Levi Lord reunited to win the NFR Open. Egusquiza/Lord were both ranked No. 3 in the World at the beginning of the Summer Run, but decided after 2.5 years to of roping together to go their separate ways. They’d already qualified for the NFR Open together, though, so they teamed back up and got faster every run together. They were 11.3 on their first one, 6.5 on their second to advance and 4.8 in the Finals. They both made more than $15,000, which was enough to push Lord to No. 2. Wacey Schalla also took back his No. 1 spot in the PRCA Bull Riding World Standings. While Stetson Wright’s 90-point barrage got all of the Cowboy Christmas headlines in the PRCA bull riding, Schalla punched right back with one single ride. The 19-year-old covered Vold Rodeo’s Haunted Hotel for 86 points in the Short Round to win The Calgary Stampede as the lone cowboy to make the whistle. Just like that, he pulled back in front of Wright with $250,631 to the eight-time World Champion’s $243,530. Derrick Begay/Colter Todd take reclaim No. 1 spots in team roping. After being briefly toppled by Tanner Tomlinson/Travis Graves, Begay/Todd used a fifth place finish in Prescott, a fourth place finish in St. Paul and a third place finish in Livingston to get back on top. Tomlinson/Graves added just one check of $699 over the Fourth. Anita Ellis dominates Calgary in the barrel racing to make $71,000 toward the World Standings. All of the money in Calgary counted toward the World Standings in the WPRA and Anita Ellis was the ultimate beneficiary by sweeping her pool and then winning the rodeo to earn the maximum amount. She started Calgary ranked No. 32 in the World, but once all of the money is counted she could be as high as No. 5, putting her in prime position to make her first National Finals. Cooper Cooke and Weston Timberman deliver two highest marked bareback rides of Calgary in last two rides. Dean Thompson kicked off the Short Round with 89.5 points before Timberman went for 92 on Agent Lynx and Cooke exploded for a career-high 94 on Disco Party. Both rides reflect the importance of Calgary this season, Timberman will go from No. 25 onto the NFR bubble, and Cooke will go from No. 16 to No. 7.Sheridan WYO Rodeo sees huge roughstcok scores. The winning scores were all 89 points or better. Sam Petersen claimed the bareback riding with an arena record-tying 91-point ride and Rocker Steiner added 90.5 of his own. Damian Brennan matched up with The Black Tie for 93 points in the saddle bronc riding. Meanwhile, bull riding was a tie between Stetson Wright and Colten Fritzlan with 89 apiece.
Saddle bronc rider Zeke Thurston wins fourth career Calgary Stampede. After finishing second a year ago, Thurston was back on top in Calgary with 92.5 points in the Finals to win it. It his first victory there since 2017 and ties him with Rod Hay for second all time with four Calgary Stampede titles. Marty Wood won five from 1954-1965. Thurston’s victory brought him from No. 11 to No. 5 in the World Standings.
