Monday Notebook, March 17: RodeoHouston Heats Up and So Does The Rio Grande Valley
RodeoHouston almost has its Semifinal field set while moves in the PRCA World Standings in a city far further south in the Lone Star State. Meanwhile, the quality action in the Southeast continued in Montgomery, Alabama.

Kade Bruno took back the No. 1 spot in the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings as it continues to change hands between him and Dawson Hay. Hay won his Super Series in Houston on Thursday to take the lead from Bruno, but Bruno immediately snatched the top spot back by riding Hot and Hairy for 87 points to win $4,300 at the Cinch World’s Toughest in Columbia, South Carolina. Bruno has $73,057 to Hay’s $71,603 and either one would find themselves on a record-shattering pace if they were to finish first or second in Houston. Saddle bronc rider Weston Patterson surpassed Zeke Thurston as the highest earner in that even in Houston through four Super Series. The 23-year-old did not show a bit of nerves in his RodeoHouston debut, winning Rounds 2 and 3 after a second place finish in Round 1 to win $8,000, besting Thurston’s $7,500 in Super Series 2. Patterson moved from No. 21 to No. 6 in the PRCA World Standings for his performance in Houston Bull rider Trevor Reiste became the first athlete to make a clean sweep of a Super Series in Houston this year. Reiste not only became the first bull rider to cover all three inside NRG Stadium in 2025, he did in style with three rides of 86.5 points or better to win all three rounds. He has competed at only San Antonio and Houston this year and is 5-for-8 on the season. Earlier in the rodeo, Dean Thompson split Round 1 and won Rounds 2 and 3 outright to win $8,500. Bull rider Ky Hamilton got his first PRCA Playoff Series win of the season at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show. Hamilton’s 88-point ride in Mercedes, Texas won him $4,756 and it marked the third time he has been 88 or more points this season. He is 7-of-14 this Eason and has been 82.5 or better on every qualified ride. He is currently No. 23 in the PRCA Bull Riding World Standings. Saddle bronc rider Rusty Wright got a win for the second week in a row. Rusty jumped another nine spots in the PRCA World Standings thanks to his biggest check of the year, $4,286 for an 87.5-point ride on Frontier Medicine to win the Southeastern Livestock Exposition (Alabama). He is No. 34 in the World after finishing No. 43 a year ago. Summer Kosel became the third barrel racer to win multiple rounds in her Super Series. She joined Lisa Lockhart and Brittany Pozzi Tonozzi thanks to winning times of 14.86 and 14.50. Barrel racing is the only event where three athletes won multiple Go-Rounds. Wacey Schalla got his biggest bareback riding win of the season at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo. Schalla made his highest marked ride of the season by far in bareback riding with an 87.5-point ride to win $4,406 and put him into the Top 50 in the World Standings. He also tied for the Xtreme Bulls win there and remains No. 2 in the PRCA Bull Riding World Standings and All-Around Standings. T Parker rode two bulls over the weekend to jump to No. 3 in the PRCA World Standings. The 21-year-old won over $10,000 with a win at the Southeastern Livestock Expo and a second place finish at the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show and Rodeo. He now has six rides of 85 points or more on the season is up to No. 3 in the World. Super Series 3 and 4 produced three team roping pairs that earned at least $6,000 in Houston. In the first two Super Series, the top earning team was Coy Brittain/Colton Brittain at $5,500 apiece. Dustin Egusquiza/Levi Lord ($7,000), Marcus Theriot/Wyatt Cox ($6,000), and Lightning Aguilera/Patrick Smith ($6,000) all cleared that total. Since Feb. 15, bareback rider Jess Pope has made eight straight rides of 84 points or better and won $25,932. Every single ride in that timeframe for Pope has resulted in a check of at least $1,000 and he most recently won the Southeastern Livestock Expo with 87 points. He is now No. 5 in the PRCA World Standings.
