NFR Round 3 Recap: Riley Webb Answers, Ty Erickson on a Tear, Tristen Hutchings Goes 90 and More

Next Saturday, we’ll know the World Champions. Right now, however, we’ve just got a glimpse of what could happen in Vegas.
Here’s your Round 3 recap…
Waylon Bourgeois started the night with a Round 3 win in the bareback riding as he continues to impress in his NFR debut. He has already won $80,684 in Vegas and has placed in all three rounds to take the early lead in the Average.
Steer wrestler Ty Erickson has been the biggest riser in any event so far the National Finals. The 2019 World Champion arrived No. 14 in the World Standings and has already jumped to No. 2 after second place finishes in the first two rounds and a 3.5-second run to win Round 3.
“There’s no pressure on me right now, what do I got to lose coming in 14th, so go at every one, try to run at the barrier and make the best runs we can,” Erickson said.
Round 1 winner Tyler Waguespack was 4.4 to split sixth with Round 2 winner Tucker Allen. Waguespack is the only bulldogger other than Erickson to place in all three rounds.
Will Lummus and Jesse Brown, who entered No. 1 and No. 2 in the World, both had no times in Round 3.
It was a crowded trip to the South Point in the team roping on Saturday night as Dawson Graham/Dillon Graham, Lightning Aguilera/Kaden Profili, and Kolton Schmidt/Jonathan Torres were all 3.8.
The Graham brothers are both in the Top 5 and Aguilera and Profili are No. 6 and No. 4 respectively.
At the very top of the World Title race, Kaleb Driggers/Junior Noguiera edged back ahead of Ward/Long with their first check, a 3.9 for fourth in the round.
Ward/Long didn’t back down, however, they were 4.0 and have won three checks for three straight runs of 4.2 seconds or faster.
Driggers currently leads Ward by about $4,000 while Nogueira leads Long by about $6,000.
Statler Wright won Round 3 of the bronc riding as all three Wright brothers placed for the second straight night.
Stetson leads the Average and Ryder has retaken the No. 1 spot in the World Standings from Round 2 winner Damian Brennan.
It didn’t take long for two-time reigning World Champion Riley Webb to answer Shad Mayfield in the tie-down roping. He turned in a 7 flat run on Saturday night to win Round 3 and push his lead in the World Standings back to about $23,000.
“I knew I wanted (that calf), got him drawn and I did my job. That calf was handling and really fit me and Rudy,” Webb said. “Rudy is long-strided and when the calf is out there in front of me, I can use my rope and go fast.”
Shad is not going away, however. He was 7.5 for fourth in the round Saturday after winning the first two rounds and leads the Average while Riley sits second.
In barrel racing, Carlee Otero bounced back from tipping barrels on her first two runs to win the round at 13.54. Emily Beisel was second and Kassie Mowry was third to retake her lead in the World Standings as Hailey Kinsel tipped a barrel.
Tristen Hutchings closed things down with the first 90+ Point Ride in the bull riding to take a victory lap and stay in the World Title race after an 0-for-2 start. He is No. 4 in the World.
As for how the Top 3 fared, Stetson Wright was 88.5 for second while Wacey Schalla and Ky Hamilton bucked off allowing Stetson to open up a lead of nearly $50,000 on Schalla and over $100,000 on Hamilton.
