PBR Indianapolis Preview: John Crimber and Sage Kimzey’s Battle for No. 1 Continues

The PBR Unleash the Beast Tour is making its 14th stop in Indianapolis and this year marks the Tour’s for the fifth consecutive trip to Gainbridge Fieldhouse, which will shift from bulls to basketball for the Final Four just two weeks later.

With only four regular-season events remaining after this weekend, so things are starting to get magnified as riders jockey for position ahead of the World Finals in May. At this point in the season, each bull ride holds even more weight than the last.

While John Crimber and Sage Kimzey stand alone at the top, more points separate No. 2 Kimzey from No. 3 Leandro Zampollo than from Zampollo to No. 10 Julio Cesar Maqrues, creating razor-thin margins among the majority clamoring for the top.

We’ll see which athletes have the most heart in America’s heartland beginning Friday night.

Top 5 Report

No. 1 John Crimber, 674 points: Crimber took full advantage of Sage Kimzey’s down week at Florida State, retaking the No. 1 spot in the World Standings. Crimber got off to a hot start, going 88+ in the first two rounds and winning the first. The 20-year-old has covered four of his last five bulls, all for 87.75+. He has the best average ride score (87.22) of any rider in the Top 10 besides Clay Guiton, has the second-most qualified rides with 19, and the fifth-best ride percentage at 55.88%. Crimber will have Crazy Water Friday night for the bull’s first UTB out.

No. 2 Sage Kimzey, 647 points: Kimzey went 1-for-2 in Tallahassee, making it the first weekend he rode less than two bulls since Milwaukee on Jan. 17, when he went without a qualified ride. His untimely performance cost him the No. 1 spot, but it’s not all bad for Kimzey he is only 27 points away from Crimber, and the two of them have put themselves on an island about 150 points away from the next closest rider. Kimzey still leads the Tour in many major statistical categories. He has the best riding percentage (66.67%), the most qualified rides (20), and the most 90+ rides (5). Kimzey faces All Magic on Friday night.

No. 3 Leandro Zampollo, 475.5 points: Zampollo didn’t have his best weekend in Tallahassee, only covering one bull, but the 25-year-old has still been on fire. He’s covered 10 of his last 13 without consecutive buck-offs. Zampollo has the third-best riding percentage on Tour at 61.29%, a remarkable difference from his career riding percentage of 41.84%. He is still searching for his first UTB win and he’ll have five more weeks to accomplish that before the World Finals. History tells us he’s close, he has finished second in three of the last five events.

No. 4 Paulo Eduardo Rossetto, 465 points: Rossetto put together his seventh Top 7 finish of the season last week, appearing in his tour-leading eighth Short Round. He has picked up the pace as of late, stringing back-to-back multi-bull weekends together for the first time since PBR Boston early January. He’ll have an opportunity for some big points on Fat Lip in its UTB debut. The bull has averaged 42.47 points in seven career PBR outs.

No. 5 Dalton Kasel, 443.5 points: Kasel has been in the worst rut he’s had all season, covering just two of his last 11. He hasn’t ridden consecutive bulls since PBR Sacramento six weeks ago. His two tour wins from earlier this season have been his saving grace. The only way to get back on track is to ride his way there. Kasel has a chance to flip the script against a tough bull in Geralt, who’s been for 43.25+ bull score three of his four outs.

Keyshawn Whitehorse: Whitehorse has had a resilient season thus far. He’s taken some major hits, he had a buck off streak that went all the way to nine, and was at risk of plummeting down the standings. However, Whitehorse’s last three event finishes he has finished 25th, 15th, and a season-best seventh, which was his fourth Top 10 finish of the year. Whitehorse also nabbed his season-high score of 88.15 on the back of Hoobastank in the Second Round. He’ll face 6-1 White Command, representing the Arizona Ridge Riders in their Team Challenge Match against the Kansas City Outlaws.

Daylon Swearingen: Besides the riders ranked in Top 5, no one has made more money on Tour than Daylon Swearingen this year ($103,000). Much of that is thanks to him winning last week’s PBR Major at Florida State. Swearingen had gone scoreless in the three events leading up to it, but his perfect weekend in Tallahassee changed everything. He was 3-for-3 and made his first 90+ point ride of the season on his way to a whopping 188 UTB Points, vaulting him to 15th in the World Rankings. He is now just 45.5 points from the Top 10 and he’ll have a chance to get even closer when he rides Super Trooper as he represents the Carolina Cowboys against the Nashville Stampede on Friday.

Felipe Furlan: Furlan may only have a 30% riding percentage with six qualified rides, but he has been impressive on every single one of those. In Tallahassee, he put together his third Top 5 finish of the season in his eighth event. He has the highest Average Score on tour at 89.31 and he’s been for 90+ points twice, joining Dalton Kasel, Clay Guiton, Sage Kimzey, and Leandro Zampollo as the only rider to do so. He is also a perfect 3-for-3 in Championship Rounds this season.

Trending Down

Cassio Dias: In the four events since winning PBR Pittsburgh, Dias has covered just two of the 10 bulls he’s been on. Oddly enough, each ride served as a Championship Round ticket for Dias, but he was unable to capitalize further.

Julio Cesar Marques: Cesar Marques currently sits 10th in the World Rankings, but hasn’t earned more than 20 UTB Points at an event since PBR Milwaukee in mid-January. He hasn’t ridden consecutive bulls since then, either. Cesar Marques is just two for his last 10 and five for his last 20 bulls.

Round 1 Matchups to Watch

Kaiden Loud v. Popeye: It has been a mixed bag for Loud the past few weeks, but he’s sitting in 13th, and certainly has the talent to get back in the Top 10. Popeye is a tricky bull who hasn’t ridden in its five UTB outs this year.  The bull score are now overpowering, ranging from 40-43.5. If Loud can conquer Popeye, it would be a massive boost not just for him, but for his Nashville Stampede teammates, who can jump into the Top 3 in the Monster Energy Team Challenge with a win Friday night.

Maverick Smith v I Hate You: Smith is coming off his best weekend of the season, finishing second with a round win and his best ride of the season, 90.95 on Lights Out in Tallahassee. I Hate You returns to the UTB tour for the first time this year and brings with him a career record of 14-8.

Marco Rizzo v Simon Says: Rizzo is close to recovering from his midseason slump and Simon Says offers a good opportunity to really show he’s back in early season form. The bull has been ridden just once this year for 87.35 by Cassio Dias.
