The second Texas Swing rodeo of the year concluded with a thrilling Short Round Saturday afternoon in San Antonio.
Wacey Schalla entered the final weekend in San Antonio as the No. 1 bareback rider in the World and validated that ranking with a 91-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Disco Party. It was the highest-marked ride of the rodeo, and Schalla finished the event with five straight rides of 84 points or better, earning $24,493 overall.
Schalla now leads the PRCA World Standings by roughly $9,000 and is averaging 86.31 points.
Jacob Lees, who was also the runner-up in Fort Worth, finished second in San Antonio as well. He earned $17,063 and sits No. 2 in the World Standings.
The 2024 World Champion J.D. Struxness captured the steer wrestling title with a 3.6-second run. It was the second-fastest time of the rodeo — trailing only his own 3.5-second run from earlier in the week.
Five-time World Champion Tyler Waguespack won $20,364, finishing just $4,300 behind Struxness in San Antonio. However, the payout was enough to move Waguespack into the No. 1 spot in the World Standings.
The money earned prior to the Finals proved crucial in team roping. Lightning Aguilera/Wyatt Cox and Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira turned in matching 3.8-second runs to tie for the Short Round win, collecting $13,760 apiece. Aguilera and Cox were crowned champions, though, after entering the round with $10,458 compared to $8,077 for Driggers and Nogueira, giving them $24,218 in total earnings.
The Blue Shirts were once again a force in saddle bronc riding, with all four Wright brothers advancing to the Finals. Stetson Wright emerged victorious with 90 points on Cervi Championship’s R. Watson’s Prairie Fire.
Ryder and Rusty Wright tied for second with 88.5 points.
Stetson banked $27,520 in San Antonio, while Rusty, who remains No. 1 in the World, earned $16,787 and Ryder added $12,934. Stetson climbed to No. 3 in the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings.
In tie-down roping, John Douch made a blistering 7.1-second run from the first position out, and it held up despite strong challenges from Bo Pickett, Tom Crouse, and Kincade Henry, all of whom were 7.8 seconds or faster.
Douch finished third in San Antonio last season with a 7.4 in the Finals.
Barrel racer Anita Ellis was already an inspirational story simply by competing in San Antonio after a fall and head injury kept her out of December’s NFR. She did far more than compete, she won.
After posting a 14.22 in the Second Semifinal, Ellis delivered her fastest run of the rodeo, a 14.16, to claim the Short Round. Across the rodeo’s 19 performances, nine runs were faster than 14.2 seconds.
After bucking off his first bull of the rodeo, Tristen Hutchings responded with four consecutive rides of 85 points or better, punctuating his week with 90.5 points on Cervi Championship’s Soccer Mom in the Finals.
Hutchings moved to No. 4 in the World Standings and captured a Texas Swing rodeo for the second straight season.
In breakaway roping, Jaci Hammons earned more than $25,000 after stopping the clock at 2.0 seconds to win the Short Round. Jordi Edens-Mitchell finished second with a 2.1 and also cleared $20,000 in total earnings.
