The Wild Card is the only way onward in San Antonio, after Semifinal 2, 10 of the 12 spots in Saturday night’s Short Round have been locked up.
Cole Reiner claimed victory in a tight bareback riding, as everyone who advanced was between 86 and 87 points.
Reiner’s 87 led the way, with Bronc Marriott (86.5), Leighton Berry (86), and Dean Thompson filing in behind him. With $6,055 in his bracket alone, Orin Larsen also made enough to move on.
Reiner has made $9,357 so far in San Antonio and began the weekend No. 9 in the World Standings.
It was also tight in the steer wrestling on a night that featured ties across the board. Holden Myers and Tyler Waguespack stopped the clock at 4.2 seconds and were followed by a three-way tie between Dakota Eldridge, Stetson Jorgensen, and Rowdy Parrott at 4.3.
Jaxon Hill/Jessen James were 4 seconds flat to bring their total earnings to $9,082, still trailing James Arviso/Rance Doyal, who finished second on Friday night with a 4.2.
It stayed fast from there. Nelson Wyatt/Jonathan Torres were 4.3, and Driggers/Nogueira, who were the only pair to make over $6,000 in their bracket, were 4.4.
With $3,853 from Bracket 5 competition, reigning World Champions Andrew Ward/Jake Long also advanced.
Sage Newman and Zeke Thurston led the way in Friday’s bronc riding, going for 88 apiece on Guns Blazing and Secret Agent. Rounding out the Top 4 were two Wright brothers, Rusty and Statler, with 87 and 86.
The Semifinal win brought Thurston’s total earnings in San Antonio to $11,284 and Newman’s to $9,082. Rusty and Statler came in at $8,531 and $7,156, while Kade Bruno’s previously earned $4,954 got him a spot in the Finals.
After his older brother Ty won the First Semifinal with a 7.2, Joel swept it for the Harris brothers with a 7.1 in the Second Semifinal.
Haven Meged still has a slight overall lead in the money in San Antonio after he was 7.7 to take second. He has $8,807 to Harris’ $8,256.
Bo Pickett, John Douch, and Shane Hanchey are the other three Finalists.
Hayle Gibson-Stillwell was 14.19 to win the barrel racing, beating out Anita Ellis by just 0.03 seconds.
With $9,357, Gibson-Stillwell leads a group of five Semifinalists separated by less than $2,500.
Katie Jo Halbert enters the Short Round with $8,806, Ellis has $8,256, and LaTricia Duke and Wenda Johnson are tied with $7,156 apiece.
In bull riding, there were five qualified rides to fill out the five Semifinal spots.
Trey Benton III was 89 points on Pickett’s Party Zone, Colten Byram was 84.5, and Luke Mackey, Tristan Mize, and Jackson Ward were all 84 points.
Breakaway roping went to Jordi Edens-Mitchell with a 1.9-second run, and there were three other times of 2.2 seconds or faster. Jaci Hammons, Kinlee Brennise, and Cadee Williams all moved on as well.
