World No. 1 Wacey Schalla Outlasts Stetson Wright to Win Inaugural Cheyenne Xtreme Bulls
Wacey Schalla was the last bull rider out Tuesday night at the inaugural CFD Xtreme Bulls, with a prestigious title, and his No. 1 world ranking, hanging in the balance.
Stetson Wright had already posted 181.5 points on two bulls. Schalla needed at least 91.5 points to win the title outright and take some money out of the World No. 2’s pocket along the way. He delivered.
Schalla rode Universal Pro Rodeo’s Euroclydon for 91.5 points to win the Finals. Paired with his 90.5 in the Long Round, his 182 on two was just enough to edge Wright’s 181.5.
After Monday night’s performance, Wright had trimmed Schalla’s lead in the World Standings to less than $5,000 by winning $10,000 in the Long Round for a 92.5-point ride on Rank Frank. On Tuesday, Schalla punched right back, winning more than $28,000 at the event to extend his lead to $13,000 instead of losing it.
“I love it, and it adds a little more attention to the friendship, I guess,” Schalla told ProRodeo.com about the battle at the top. “But we’re really close, and if I ever need any help, Stetson is one guy I can go to and ask for it.”
The back-and-forth between Schalla and Wright has defined the entire Summer Run. On June 19, Schalla led by about $28,000, only to see the gap erased and Wright take over the top spot by July 1. After Wright built some distance during Cowboy Christmas, the Okie punched back, winning Calgary to reclaim No. 1, a spot he’s held despite Wright’s furious charge.
Since June 17, Stetson Wright has made roughly $131,000, more than most bull riders will make in a season. But he’s barely dented Schalla’s lead, because Schalla has made $119,000 of his own in that same stretch.
As it stands right now, it is Schalla with $283,305 and Wright with $270,088. The next closest bull rider is Tristen Hutchings at $186,936.
