The final stop of the 2025 Texas Swing delivered rodeo records, Short Round rallies, and some high-scoring sweeps by two young roughstock cowboys.

In bareback riding, rookie Sage Allen got the biggest win of his career so far by claiming victory in both the Long Round and the Short Round. His two rides were 89 and 89.5 points respectively and he ended up four points clear of the rest of the field at 178.5 points on two. It’s the second straight year a young gun swept the bareback as Cooper Cooke did so in 2024 on the way to his first NFR. That could be in Allen’s future, too, as he entered the weekend No. 16 in the PRCA World Standings and won over $15,000.

In a fast-pace steer wrestling from start to finish, it was the cowboy who briefly held the arena record (2.9 seconds) that eventually came away with the win. Although Tyler Waguespack (2.8) broke Jesse Brown’s record the next day, Brown got the last laugh by turning in three straight runs of 4.3 seconds or faster to win the Average with an aggregate time of 10.7 seconds. It was a talented top of the leaderboard with 11-time NFR qualifier Dakota Eldridge taking second and Dalton Massey finishing third. Will Lummus, Rowdy Parrott, Bridger Anderson, Hunter Cure and Stetson Jorgensen also finished in the Top 8.

In team roping, Kolton Schmidt/Will Woodfin lead entering the Finals and took care of business with a 5.4-second run to clinch the victory, surviving a scare from Short Round winners Manny Egusquiza/Walt Woodard. In the end, it was Schmidt/Woodfin at 14 seconds on three and Egusquiza/Woodard at 14.1.

Saddle bronc riding, on the other hand, did see the winner of the rodeo make a big rally in the Short Round. Dawson Hay entered tied for sixth, but with 90 points on Pickett’s Rough Motion, the No. 2 ranked bronc rider upended the leaderboard and won the rodeo with 175.5 points on two. Hay also won San Antonio, making him the only saddle bronc rider to grab two Texas Swing victories in 2025.

Shad Mayfield, who won Fort Worth, also won San Angelo, joining Hay as a cowboy who won their second Texas Swing Rodeo of the year over the weekend. He made runs of 7.7, 8.5, and 7.7 again to edge Marty Yates by a tenth of a second. Mayfield now only needs to win Houston to have all five of rodeo’s early season Crown Jewels under his belt.

In breakaway roping, Bailey Bates was as consistent as can be turning in the same time three runs in a row. She picked a good number to settle on, 1.9, and won the rodeo with a total time of 5.7 seconds on three.

Barrel racing belonged to Kassie Mowry, who has been on a heater since December. She made the two fastest runs of the entire rodeo, a 14.01 to win Round 2 and a 14.02 to win the Finals to ultimately finish more than a tenth better than the rest of the field.

Championship Friday started with a sweep and finished with one. TJ Gray won the bull riding after winning the Long Round with an 89-point ride and doing the same in the Short Round to the tune of 90 points. He and Ky Hamilton were the only ones to ride a pair and Gray finished 9.5 points better than the 2023 World Champion.

QUICK DRAW

Tyler Waguespack’s 2.8-second run broke an rodeo record that was first set by Roy Duvall in 1986.

Walt Woodard has never won San Angelo in his storied career that features 20 NFR qualifications. He almost did so for the first time at age 69.

Kassie Mowry is No. 1 in the WPRA World Standings competing in just 10 rodeos so far this season. That is the fewest of any barrel racer in the Top 10.

Sage Allen’s 178.5 points on two in the bareback riding match the highest in San Angelo over the last decade. He is tied with Caleb Bennett, who did it in 2019.
