Hall of Fame tie-down roper Roy Cooper died Tuesday night at the age of 69.

According to the Wise County EMS and Decatur Fire Department, a fire engulfed his one-story home.

“It is with great sadness that our family shares the passing of our Dad, The Super Looper, Roy Cooper,” his son Tuf wrote on Facebook. “We’re all in shock and at a loss for words from this tragedy at the moment.”

Cooper broke out as a full-time pro in 1976 and immediately won the World Title in addition to Rookie of the Year.

He would go to five more PRCA Tie-Down Roping World Titles, all coming consecutively between 1980 and 1984. He also won the Steer Roping and All-Around World Titles in 1983.

Known as the Super Looper, Cooper was one of the most dominant ProRodeo athletes of all time and was the first PRCA cowboy to earn more than $2 million.

He was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame in 1979, just three years into his professional career. He is also a member of the National Rodeo Hall of Fame, Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame.

He is survived by his three sons — Clint, Clif, and Tuf — all three of whom made the National Finals the same year in 2010.
