Ryder Wright Goes 90, Shad Mayfield Gets Biggest Win Since San Angelo and More – Vernal Dinosaur Roundup Recap
There was more than $200,000 up for grabs at Vernal’s Dinosaur Roundup Rodeo and among the winners were three cowboys ranked No. 1 or 2 in the PRCA World Standings.
In bareback riding Wacey Schalla got one of his two Playoff Series wins over the weekend by riding Powder River Rodeo’s Twisted tea for 86.5 points to clear CNFR qualifier Gavin French and World No. 1 Bradlee Miller by two points. The win paid Schalla more than $6,000 and helped him go from No. 37 to No. 28 in the PRCA Bareback Riding World Standings. He remains No. 2 in the All-Around behind Stetson Wright.
The timed events were a one-header, with at least $4,000 awarded to each champion. Cole Walker claimed the steer wresting with a 3.5-second run ($4,347), Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira and Hiyo Yazzie/Shawn Murphy shared the team roping title at 4.3 apiece ($4,780 each), and Shad Mayfield was victorious in tie-down roping with a 7.7 ($5,252).
Mayfield is No. 2 in the PRCA World Standings and is now about $17,000 behind reigning World Champion Riley Webb. Mayfield became the second tie-down roper to clear $100,000 on the season over the weekend.
Saddle bronc riding was won by World No. 1 Ryder Wright, who went 90 on in his home state on Big Handful of Powder River. Wright won $5,795 in Vernal as part of a weekend in which he banked more than $14,000 in total.
“I feel good. I like having that target on my back. I’d just as soon stay there if I could,” Wright told ProRodeo.com. “Hopefully I keep drawing good horses and keep plugging away.”
Barrel racing saw a tie between Hayle Gibson-Stillwell and Jordan Knight at 16.90 seconds while Hailey Kinsel was third with 16.97 and Andrea Busby was fourth.
The biggest winner of all was Trevor Reiste in the bull riding. Because only two cowboys made the whistle across three performances, Reiste’s 85.5 points on Powder River Rodeo’s Seven Shy won him $10,986. Koby Jacobson was awarded $9,549 for an 81-point ride.
