Monday Notebook, July 7: A Fourth of July Extravaganza
With eight PRCA Playoff Series Rodeos concluding between July 2 and July 6, it’s almost impossible to make sense of this past weekend in ProRodeo, but we are going to try.
Here goes nothing…
World No. 1 and World No. 2 tie-down roper Riley and Shad Mayfield both made more than $30,000 over the Fourth of July. Despite Webb getting the Reno title, Mayfield did not give him an inch over the weekend. Shad notched three second place finishes in Livingston, Basin City, and St. Paul and also brought in checks from Red Lodge and Cody. He also crucially bounced back from a Round 1 12.8 in Calgary with 8.1 and 7.6 to win $7,100 toward the World Standings (80 percent of the money in Calgary goes the standings) and advance to Showdown Sunday. Webb, on the other hand, was the champion in St. Paul and Basin City and also picked up $4,376 for a sixth place finish in Cody. He has a big opportunity in Calgary beginning today. Stetson Wright has made seven bull rides of 90 or more points since June 19. The money has poured in for the eight-time World Champion in that timeframe as he has banked $82,000. Some of the largest checks in the last three weeks include $21,470 for winning Reno, $9,092 for winning the World’s Oldest Rodeo and $6,000+ in Livingston, Oakley City, Greeley, Pecos, and Springdale, Arkansas. Last season, Tristen Hutchings lead the PRCA with six bull rides for the entire season. Ryder Wright extends lead in the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings with six straight rides of 84 points or better. The reigning World Champion has now made $193,000 on the year and added $19,500 total over the Fourth from third place finishes in Cody and Prescott as well as a win in Livingston. He also picked up small checkers in Red Lodge and Oakley City. Since June 11, Wright is averaging 86.4 points per ride. Reigning team roping World Champions Tyler Wade/Wesley Thorp moved up five spots to No. 5 in the World Standings over the weekend. Wade/Thorp notched a third place finish, second place finish and a win over the weekend to go along with a Round 1 win in St. Paul. They made a total of four runs of 4.9 seconds or faster over Cowboy Christmas and were paid at least $3,800 for all four of them. Reno Rodeo bareback champion Jess Pope picked up two wins and collected four checks of $3,900 or more over the Fourth. Pope went to four Fourth of July rodeos and was 86 points or better at four of them, which got him wins at the Black Hills Roundup (South Dakota) and the World’s Oldest Rodeo (Arizona). To go along with that he added third place finish in Oakley City and a second place finish in Livingston for a total of four checks of $3,900 or more. Pope has moved up three spots from No. 7 to No. 4 since the beginning of Reno. Derrick Begay/Colter Todd take reclaim No. 1 spots in team roping. After being briefly toppled by Tanner Tomlinson/Travis Graves, Begay/Todd used a fifth place finish in Prescott, a fourth place finish in St. Paul and a third place finish in Livingston to get back on top. Tomlinson/Graves added just one check of $699 over the Fourth. Bareback rider Garrett Shadbolt picks up five checks to get up to No. 3 in the World. The three-time NFR qualifier continues to quietly put together the best regular season of his career. Over the weekend, he took second in St. Paul, fifth in Mandan and third in Oakley City with rides of 88, 85.5, and 88 points respectively. All told, he banked $18,000 over the Fourth to go along with his $11,000 from Reno. Three bull riders rode for 92 or more points in Oakley City, Utah. In one performance there was five rides of 88 points or better, including 92 points from Stetson Wright and Trey Kimzey. Their lead didn’t last, however, as Dustin Boquet upended the leaderboard one more time in the final performance to win thanks to 92.5 points aboard Legend Rodeo’s Huckleberry. The saddle bronc riding was terrific as well, with Zeke Thurston winning thanks to a 92-point score of his own. It took at least 88 points there to get a check.Lefty Holman, Brody Cress, and Weston Patterson fill up the coffers in Calgary. As mentioned before, 80 percent of the money in Calgary counts toward the PRCA World Standings this season which means even just performing well in your pool will get you a payday in five-figure territory. Holman, Cress, and Patterson were fixtures in the saddle bronc riding in Pool A. Lefty was 87.5 points or better on all three rides and never finished worse than second in a round to collect $14,400 toward the Standings and move to No. 11. Brody was not far behind with three rides of 85.5 points or better to bank $13,600 toward the Standings. While Patterson earned $11,800 toward the Standings with a win in Round 2 and Top 4 finishes in the other two rounds. They are ranked No. 11, No. 8 and No. 5 respectively.
