Monday Notebook, Sept. 15: Jacek Frost, Lefty Holman, and Jordan Spears Push for the NFR
Whether it’s the barrel pattern or the stakes, everything is bigger once the season reaches Pendleton. And the 115th edition contributed plenty to this week’s Monday Notebook.
Jacek Frost rises from No. 23 to No. 13 in PRCA Bareback Riding World Standings with massive back-to-back wins. The 21-year-old is suddenly in position for his first NFR after winning Pendleton and Puyallup in consecutive weekends. Across those two rodeos, he made five rides of 86.5 points or better and won $35,046. He wasn’t done over yet either. He also took first at the Othello PRCA Rodeo in Washington and the Marysville Stampede in California to add another $4,200.
Derrick Begay/Colter Todd back on top in topsy-turvy Team Roping World Standings. Begay and Todd were No. 1 for a majority of the time between the end of RodeoHouston until August and now for the first time since Aug. 8, both of them are first in the World Standings. They won Round 2 in Pendleton and took third at the New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo to bank a total of $10,327 on the weekend. Jordan Spears gets clutch win with 2-for-2 performance in Pendleton. Spears entered the weekend No. 16 in the PRCA Bull Riding World Standings, but moved up the all important one spot by sweeping Pendleton to with rides of 88 and 86.5 points to win $19,006. He had previously bucked off eight in a row. Lefty Holman moves into 15th spot in Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings after win at New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo. Holman has been doing everything he can to grab one of the last spots and make his fourth straight NFR and fifth overall. After winning Utah’s Own PRCA Rodeo with 90 two weeks ago, he was 88.5 over the weekend to bank close to $6,000 at the New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo. He made the Finals in Pendleton to add another $5,964 and is holding the 15th spot by less than $1,000 over Chase Brooks. Permitholder Hayden Welsh impresses at Xtreme Bulls Finale. With $147,137 on the year, the 20-year-old would be No. 11 in the PRCA World Standings had he bought his card. Instead, he will have to wait another year to ride with the best in Vegas, but that is something he has proved he can do. At the Pendleton Xtreme Bulls, he was 3-for-3 with three straight rides of 86 points or better to win among the PRCA’s top cowboys. That came after he was second in Puyallup the weekend prior. Dylan Hancock wins tie-down roping in Pendleton amid best season of career. The 21-year-old is flirting with the Top 5 in the PRCA World Standings after making the National Finals for the first time a season ago. In Pendleton, he placed in the Top 5 on his last two runs and won the Finals with an 8.6-second run. His aggregate time of 30.4 seconds on three helped him best two other calf ropers who were first time NFR qualifiers in 2024, Joel Harris and Quade Hiatt. No. 4 tie-down roper John Douch gets first outright Playoff win of 2025. Despite bringing his season total to more than $150,000 over the weekend, John Douch had just one Playoff Series win coming into one of the final regular season weekends – a tie in Gooding. He finally got to have first place to himself at one of the PRCA’s 60 highest paying rodeos when he was 16 flat on two to win the New Mexico State Fair and Rodeo. Hudson Bolton boosts Resistol Rookie of the Year chances with strong showing in Pendleton. Welsh wasn’t the only young bull rider who showed himself as a name to watch in the future, 20-year-old Hudson Bolton, who has been in the Top 10 coming down the stretch did the same in Pendleton. Bolton, now No. 8 in the World, was 2-for-3 for 177.5 points on two in the Xtreme Bulls Finale and also finished third in the rodeo with an 87-point ride in the Long Round. He won $39,513 combined in Pendleton to take control of the Resistol Rookie of the Year race as he hopes to become the first cowboy ever to win PBR and PRCA Rookie of the Year in the same season.
