PBR Sacramento Preview: Paulo Eduardo Rossetto Looks to Repeat, Jess Lockwood Injury Update and More

Last year’s PBR Sacramento’s Short Round featured three of the current world Top 10 cowboys in the UTB Standings: Paulo Eduardo Rossetto, Sage Kimzey, and Dalton Kasel. It also featured another five who aren’t riding in this year’s event, four of whom have yet to record a UTB out this year.
It was ultimately a battle between Luciano De Castro and Paulo Eduardo Rossetto. The pair were the only two riders to ride all four bulls over the weekend. Rossetto rode Cool Whip for 89.75 points for his final ride. However, De Castro scored a weekend-high 90.75-point ride atop Gene’s Best, which won him the event.
Presently, De Castro sits in 34th place in the world rankings with just 49 points. He takes on 2-0 Benny in Friday’s first section.
Rossetto, on the other hand, is sitting comfortably in sixth place in the World Rankings with 215 points. He drew Lap Dancer as he attempts to avoid his buck-off streak reaching three in a row.
Bull Competition Reloads
The UTB tour is shaking things up in its first time out west this year. Friday’s matchups feature more UTB rookie Bulls than any Long Round we’ve seen this season so far.
The group includes proven bovines from the Velocity and Touring Pro Division, even multiple that haven’t recorded a single out yet, will be getting their shot on Friday.
King of the Kasel
The lone two-time event winner this season is World No. 1 Dalton Kasel, who enters Sacramento No. 1 in the World 323 points.
A year ago, Kasel won Round 2 in California’s capital city and made the Short Round, finishing 11th overall.
He currently has a 43-point cushion between him and second-ranked Sage Kimzey, who has 280 points.
Kasel enters PBR Sacramento having ridden five of his last seven bulls and all of them have been at least 84.75 points. Prior to that stretch, he had bucked off three in a row.
Monster Energy Teams Challenge Update
Kasel and Kimzey will be teaming up Friday night, though, as the Austin Gamblers (1-0) take on the Carolina Cowboys (0-1) in a matchup between two of the best teams from the 2025 PBR Teams season.
The duo will be facing Wild Mustard and Swirl Your Glass respectively and those two bulls have combined for a buck-off rate of nearly 85 percent.
The Cowboys are led by Clay Guiton, who placed second last week in Tampa. Grayson Cole, Manoelito de Souza Jr., and Daylon Swearingen will also be in the lineup.
The Nashville Stampede (0-0) make their Teams Challenge debut Friday night as they take on the 1-0 New York Mavericks.
The Stampede will close with World No. 9 Kaiden Loud, who got off to a hot start this season with back-to-back Top 5 finishes in Manchester and Chicago; however, he has yet to crack the Top 5 since. Loud drew Hot Sauce, a bull making his UTB debut.
Loud is supported by Alan De Souza, Mason Taylor, and reserve Cleber Herique Marques, who rode for the Arizona Ridge Riders last week. No one in the trio currently sits in the Top 25.
They’ll need their absolute best as they face a loaded New York Maverick roster that features only one rider outside the Top 5, three riders in the Top 5, and two in the Top 5.
World No. 11 Leandro Zampollo, No. 5 Marco Rizzo, and No. 3 Kulio Cesar Marques make up the turbo-charged core of this New York Maverick roster.
Cesar Marques was No. 1 entering last weekend, but failed to register a qualified ride in Tampa. He’ll get a shot to help his teammates and himself against Bear Cat in the bull’s first UTB out.
Rizzo, the closer, will matchup with Me More Cowboy while Zampollo will take on the tough veteran Snappy.
Lockwood Sidelined with Neck Injury
After having finally won his first UTB event in six years, having battled injury after injury, Jess Lockwood will not be riding in Sacramento after suffering an apparent neck injury during his event-winning ride last weekend in Tampa.
Lockwood already has a history with neck injuries, suffering a collarbone break in 2019 and surviving a near-fatal neck injury in 2024.
Despite the scare, Lockwood expects to be ready to go the following week for PBR Salt Lake City.
Keep An Eye On…
Seventh-ranked Brady Fielder and 10th-ranked John Crimber each went 1-for-2 bulls last week, bringing their point totals to 213 and 189, respectively. They haven’t completely lost their early season momentum, but they have lost their leverage in the standings. Each is in a dangerous position to fall into unfamiliar territory, out of the Top 10.
Crimber will face Creedmore Precision in the bovine’s first out in over a year and fourth overall. The bull has yet to be ridden in PBR competition.
Fielder faces Take Down in a potentially point-wealthy matchup. Take Down has been 43+ in both of his UTB out.
Conversely, cowboys like Koltin Hevalow, Callum Miller, and Alex Cerqueira, who are ranked No. 12-14, are ready to jump into that Top 10.
They have all shown flashes in recent weeks and will look to put it all together in Sacramento.
