Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo Bracket 5 Recap: A Star-Studded Saddle Bronc Riding and a Show from Rookie Hayden Welsh

Bracket 5 wrapped up at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Saturday, with Semifinalists and Wild Cards decided across all eight events.
A pair of 2025 NFR qualifiers, Tilden Hooper and Sam Petersen won rounds in Bracket 5 and it was enough for both of them to move to the Semifinals. Hooper was 86 and 85.5 points on his two horses, while Petersen, the reigning NFR Average Champion, was 87 and 82. By splitting third in Round 1 and taking fourth in Round 2, Ben Kramer was the bracket’s Wild Card.
In steer wrestling, all three cowboys who moved on made between $3,000 and $2,500. Garrett Oates was ultimately No. 1 with times of 4.5 and 5.7 seconds for seconds in Round 1 and fourth in Round 2. Boyd Sawyer, who won Round 1 with a 3.9 and Landris White, who was 3.4 to win Round 2, both ended up with $2,625. With a tiebreaker, Sawyer advanced to the Semifinals with White getting the Wild Card.
Brady Tryan/Paden Bray made runs of 4.5 and 4.4 seconds to take first in Round 1 and second in Round 2 to win Bracket 5 by nearly $1,000. With $3,500, Kavis Drake/Denim Ross were second while Kolton Schmidt/Chase Tryan made $3,200 to get the Wild Card spot.
In saddle bronc riding, it was a trio of the sport’s best winning the lion’s share of the money. Ryder Wright, Kade Bruno, and Lefty Holman all made at least $3,500. Wright and Bruno were in lockstep, splitting second in Round 1 with 87 points and first in Round 2 with 86. Meanwhile, finished with $3,500, just $167 behind the other two with a win in Round 1 thanks to an 89-point ride and a fourth place finish in Round 2.
Tie-down roping was swept by Trenton Smith, who became the first male timed event athlete to win two rounds at the 2026 FWSSR. He was 8.5 and 8.9 seconds on his two runs. Britt Bedke joins him in the Semifinals while Luke Potter was the bracket’s Wild Card.
Barrel racing on the other hand has been sweeps galore and in Bracket 5, that trend continued with Hailey Kinsel and Sister making runs of 16.56 and 16.49. Tayla Moeykens made $3,400 to get the second Semifinal spot while Lindsay Muggli grabbed the Wild Card spot.
In bull riding, Hayden Welsh was 2-for-2 in style making rides of 89.5 and 90 points to win both rounds. With $6,000, he was well in front of Gavin Hauck ($2,400) and Colton Coffman ($2,200).
With $3,500, Jordi Edens-Mitchell narrowly won Bracket 5 over Braylee Shepherd, who made $3,400. Edens-Mitchell was the winner of Round 1 with a 2.1-second run. Cali Griffin made $2,500 to get the Wild Card spot.
