Monday Notebook, Aug. 17: Ryder Wright Rolls to No. 1, Shad Mayfield’s NFR Push Continues and More

There are plenty of good stories in ProRodeo right now, and some of them were front and center over the weekend as we now have just six weeks to go in the regular season.
Ryder Wright has somehow surpassed his brothers Rusty and Stetson in the PRCA Saddle Bronc Riding World Standings, while Shad Mayfield is seemingly unstoppable in the tie-down roping. He continues to make the incredibly difficult look awfully easy.
Not only that, the Farm-City Pro Rodeo in Hermiston, Oregon, was the site of repeat winners and a bubble bareback rider making a move.
Saddle bronc rider Brody Wells repeats at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo to move up three spots in the World Standings. Wells has been dominant in Hermiston, Oregon the last two seasons. In 2025, when it was a one-header, he won with 90. Over the weekend, he swept in the new two-head format with rides of 88 and 90 points and tallied over $18,000 to jump from No. 10 to No. 7 in the World. Wells also won the United States Bronc Match on August. 5.
Ryder Wright rises over his brothers to No. 1 in the World Standings. While Rusty and Stetson got all of the headlines, Ryder has been steadily climbing the leaderboard and after starting the Summer Run No. 10, he is now the top-ranked saddle bronc rider in the World. Ryder was terrific again over the weekend with five straight rides of 83.5 or better, enough to get him second in the Average at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo and first in the one-header at the Owyhee County Rodeo. Ryder has made a whopping $144,000 during the Summer Run.
Tie-down roper Shad Mayfield made three runs of 7.5 seconds or faster to crack the Top 20. After beginning his season in the muddle of June, the seven-time NFR qualifier is up to No. 18 in the World and now just $5,000 out of the No. 15 spot in the World Standings. He was 7.2 to set an arena record and split the win with Ty Harris at the Omak Stampede and also won the Jerome County Fair and Rodeo with a 7.5. His fastest run of the weekend was at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo, where he was 7 flat to win the Short Round. Last week alone, Mayfield won seven checks and over $21,000.
Stetson Wright made a big return to ProRodeo with a 92-point ride at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo. It didn’t take long for the reigning PRCA World Champion to get back in the swing of things after a month layoff. Yes, he bucked off of his first bull coming back from injury, but he looked like the Stetson Wright of old when he turned in his seventh 90+ point ride of the year on Downtown Brown. It won him $19,375 and took him from No. 6 to No. 4 in the World.
Derrick Begay/Colter Todd are back in NFR contention after back-to-back weekends with a rodeo win. They’ve roped together at two of the last three NFRs, but slipped as low as No. 30 at the beginning of August. Now with wins at the Lea County PRCA Rodeo and Rodeo Billings, they are No. 22 and 23 respectively and each within $15,000 of an NFR spot.
No. 3 bull rider Luke Mackey kept things rolling with a 4-for-7 weekend. The Colorado Kid has been remarkably consistent for the entire season when you consider he has made over $196,000 on just one rodeo win. It’s because he hits tons of rodeos each week, and usually rides more bulls than he bucks off. Last weekend was no different. His four qualified rides were all between 83.5 and 86.5 points, they got him two Top 3 and three Top 5 finishes and he ended a making a total of $9,469. His 69 qualified rides are the most in the PRCA this season and he is covering 60.5% for the year.
Steer wrestler Cash Robb added two more times in the 3s over the weekend, giving him 17 for the season, the second-most in the PRCA. After recording three times faster than 4.0 the weekend prior, Robb was back with a 3.9 in Hermiston and a 3.5 to win the Owyhee County Rodeo over the weekend. He is No. 3 in the PRCA World Standings.
Tie-down roper Haven Meged won over $12,000 on the weekend on four checks of $2,000 or more to move to No. 2 in the World. Meged came up empty at the weekend’s biggest rodeo in Hermiston, but more than made up for it elsewhere. He won the Fallon County Fair and Rodeo with a 7.8-second run and took third in Billings with 7.7. He also added Top 5 finishes in Kalispell and Jerome. Since Aug. 1, Meged has placed in 10 of the 11 rodeos he has entered and has won $44,000.
Garrett Shadbolt moved up five spots to No. 17 in the PRCA World Standings with a win at the Farm-City Pro Rodeo. The Nebraska native has been to four of the last five NFRs and was slowly creeping toward the danger zone in 2026. He made a big move, however, with rides of 88 and 89.5 points to win the Average by one in Hermiston. He wasn’t done there, though, he also won the Jerome County Fair and Rodeo and the Owyhee County Rodeo to jump five spots in one weekend. He has made over $35,000 in August.
