Governor’s Cup Round 2 Recap: Rocker Steiner Wins Bareback Riding, Justin Shaffer Breaks Arena Record and More
The second of two Quarterfinal Rounds at the Governor’s Cup paid another $11,910 for the winners, but more importantly, it narrowed it down to eight athletes in each event.
In bareback riding, World No. 1 Rocker Steiner ensured he would stay at the year-end party for Sunday by riding for 87 points on Three Hills Rodeo’s Tequila Queen to win the round. He finished tied for third with 170.50 on two while World No. 5 Cole Franks and World No. 2 Bradlee Miller were the top two from the Quarterfinals.
Steer wrestling belonged to Justin Shaffer, who advanced No. 1 with 6.9 on two following an arena-record 3.0-second run on Saturday night. Every bulldogger who advanced was 8.6 second or better on two and three of them were 7.5 or faster.
In team roping, Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira bounced back from a no time by winning Round 2 with a 3.7, which was enough to advance them to the Semifinals in sixth place.
Q Taylor won the bronc riding with the same score that Statler Wright did on Friday night, an 87.25-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Bottom Up Check. The payday moved Taylor up to No. 16 in the World Standings.
In tie-down roping, John Douch made the fastest run of the rodeo with a 7.5. Round 1 winner and reigning champion Shad Mayfield was 15.8 on two.
And there was another split in the breakaway roping with Martha Angelone and Aspen Miller turning in matching 2.4-second times.
Reigning champion Hailey Kinsel made a blistering 14.20 run, complete with a fist pump, but because of a 19.39 in Round 1, she will not be moving on.
To close the night, they rode seven bulls and Wacey Schalla and Scott Wells had the top score with 87.75 apiece. Ky Hamilton was third an pushed his two-head score to 176.25 on two, 14.5 points more than anyone else.
