California Rodeo Salinas brought a new No. 1 in team roping and surges into NFR contention in steer wrestling and bull riding.

Every event, top to bottom, had potential NFR ramifications in this one.

Jayco Roper swept the bareback riding on his way to winning the Average by 4.5 points. He was 87 on both horses and won a grand total of $15,872 to go from No. 13 to No. 11 in the World.

“It’s been the best (July) I’ve ever had for sure,” Roper said. “Winning big rodeos like that helps a whole bunch, especially with how much the long round and the short round paid a really good chunk.”

Steer wrestler Mike McGinn moved up even more than Roper did. He placed in the Top 3 in all three rounds in Salinas and won the Average by almost a second with an aggregate time of 21.3 seconds. McGinn’s $15,628 made him the highest earning timed event athlete and propelled him from No. 22 to No. 13 in the PRCA World Standings, putting his first career NFR qualification within reach.

In team roping, Tanner Tomlinson/Travis Graves won by three tenths despite placing in just two of the five rounds. They were clean throughout, however, and never had a time longer than 12 seconds flat. The win allowed Tomlinson to jump Derrick Begay to become No. 1 on the head side while Graves remains No. 2 on the heel side behind Begay’s partner Colter Todd.

Damian Brennan stayed hot to win the saddle bronc riding and he has now five rodeos since June 20. He was 86.5 and 87.5 on his two horses to finish with 174 points on two. The No. 3 bronc rider in the World has now won a check on 15 of his last 17 horses.

Tie-down roping belonged to Dylan Hancock, who may have gotten the marquee win he needs to make a return trip to Las Vegas. All three of Hancock’s times were between 9.4 and 10.4 seconds and he won a check in all three rounds en route to a 1.8-second margin of victory over World No. 1 Shad Mayfield. Hancock is ranked 13th.

Rylee George claimed the breakaway title, edging out Beau Peterson by just one tenth of a second. George was 13.8 on three to Peterson’s 13.9. The difference came in the Short Round then George was 3.9 and Peterson was 4.3.

Jordan Driver was the barrel racing champion after getting things started on the right foot with a Round 1 victory. She was ultimately just four one-hundredths ahead of Carlee Otero, who won the Finals. Driver finished with an aggregate time of 64.84 seconds on four.

Bull riding saw another big jump into NFR contention when Jordan Spears went from No. 18 to No. 12 thanks to winning more than $18,000 in Salinas. He won the Long Round with 89 points and then was one of two bull riders to make the whistle in the Finals.

QUICK DRAW

Between rounds in Salinas, Jayco Roper also won the First Performance in Cheyenne to advance to the Semifinals.

With his Salinas winnings, Mike McGinn has now made more this season ($71,453) than any other year in his career. His previous career-best finish was No. 20 with $63,558.

Dylan Hancock’s 1.8-second margin of victory is the largest in the tie-down roping in Salinas since 2018.
