Monday Notebook, July 28: Utah Pioneer Week and Cheyenne Frontier Days Brings a Big Weekend
The four biggest rodeos over the weekend, Cheyenne Frontier Days and a trifecta in Utah, combined to pay to more than $2.7 million.
Snapping up large portions of that prize money are names you have come to expect to do so at this point in the season. Stetson Wright, Rocker Steiner, Damian Brennan, and Wacey Schalla just to name a few.
All three roughstock champions rode for more than 90 at Cheyenne Frontier Days. The winners included two up-and-comers and now the most decorated bronc rider in CFD history. In bareback riding, Kade Berry went for an arena-record setting 93.5 points on Lunatic Heaven to get the biggest win of his career, while 22-year-old Aussie bull rider Qynn Andersen went 90 for the first time in his PRCA career to crack the Top 10 in the World Standings. And in the saddle bronc riding, Wyoming native Brody Cress became the first cowboy to win four titles in Cheyenne, getting his first in six years with 91 points aboard The Black Tie. Wacey Schalla gets into NFR contention in the bareback riding with win at Utah Days of ’47. Schalla’s bull riding gets all of the headlines, and rightfully so, but he went toe-to-toe with some of the best bareback riders in the World and came out on top in Salt Lake City to win $18,000 for a 90-point ride on Nite Faded in the Finals. Couple that with his Long Round win in SLC and two 90-point rides in Cheyenne, and Schalla made over $25,000 toward the PRCA World Standings over the weekend after entering No. 29. After 22 years, tie-down roper Tyson Durfey gets first career Cheyenne Frontier Days victory. The semi-retired 2016 World Champion proved its never too late achieve your dreams. In the Semifinals, he was 9.4, the fastest time of his career in Frontier Park before winning it all with a 10.9. He was almost a second faster than runner-up Jake Pratt. Bareback rider Rocker Steiner wins $37,000 on the weekend to extend lead in PRCA World Standings. Steiner cleaned up at Utah Pioneer Week. He won $14,770 for a victory at Spanish Fork Fiesta Days and $13,000 for a second place finish at Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo. He also added $4,315 for a fourth place finish in Ogden. He wasn’t done there either as he was 92 to win a Semifinal in Cheyenne. Since July 9, eight of his nine rides have been 85.5 points or better including two 90+ Point Rides. Stetson Wright wins saddle bronc riding and bull riding at Ogden Pioneer Days. Wright went 90 on Joker Poker to win the saddle bronc riding and 88 at Leonidas in the bull riding. In total, that made him over $27,000. Those two wins were crucial for different reasons. In the bronc riding, he jumped from No. 17 to No. 15 to get on the right side of the NFR bubble and in bull riding, he got back to the No. 1 spot. Wright also leads the All-Around with $388,915. No. 3 ranked saddle bronc rider Damian Brennan continues to close the gap on Dawson Hay and Ryder Wright. Brennan cashed $14,495 for a 91-point ride to win Spanish Fork and added another $3,875 for making the Finals at Utah Days of ’47. On July 1, he was No. 7 in the PRCA World Standings with $92,136. As of July 28, he has $174,650 and is now within $14,000 of No. 2 Dawson Hay and $43,000 behind No. 1 Ryder Wright. At the beginning of the month, Brennan was $91,000 behind Wright. Tie-down roper Haven Meged wins $10,000 in return from injury. Meged missed a little over a month and slipped from No. 17 down to No. 38, but he got some of the ground back. In his first weekend back, he got to No. 31 in the World Standings by winning the Little Big Horn Stampede and the Central Montana Rodeo and placing second in the Average in Deadwood. Steer wrestler Gavin Soileau jumps six spots into Top 15 with win in Ogden. Soileau won more than $11,000 in Ogden, where he was 3.6 and 4.3 on his two runs, which is sometimes all it takes to rise above the bulldogging logjam. He went from No. 21 to No. 15 and has $71,376 on the year, which is $12,000 more than his previous career high set in 2024.
