San Antonio Bracket 3 Wraps Up With Mason Moody’s Flawless 3-for-3 Showing
Mason Moody was the only bull rider to ride to multiple bulls in Bracket 3 in San Antonio and to sweeten the deal he rode all three, cruising to over $9,500 earnings and comfortably finding a spot in the Semifinals there for the first time in his career.
“Man it feels great go 3-for-3. Last year, I went 0-for-3 in San Antonio and didn’t have the best winter, then got hurt in Houston, so I was behind going into the Summer Run,” he said. “To have this boost just makes it that much better.”
Moody is going to need every dollar he can to accomplish the goal he had last year but did finish – make the National Finals Rodeo for the first time. In 2024, he finished with over $96,000 and still was No. 23 in the final PRCA World Standings.
This year, Moody finds himself No. 9 in the PRCA World Standings so far thanks to a 13-of-20 start to the season. He’s not focused on anything particular to accomplish that 65 percent riding percentage, just going in with a clear mind to do his job.
“At the end of last year, I was riding good and just trying to keep that momentum going,” the 21-year-old said. “Bull riding is all about riding the highs and lows, so when you have this good of a start a big rodeo, you just try and ride the high all the way. It might work out in my favor and it might not, time will tell.”
Other Bracket 3 winners in San Antonio were Richmond Champion in bareback riding ($6,303), Justin Shaffer, Jace Melvin, and Trisyn Kalawaia in steer wrestling ($4,202 each), Clay Smith/Coleby Payne in team roping ($5,777), Layton Green in saddle bronc riding ($5,252), Kyle Lucas in tie-down roping ($6,303), and Katelyn Scott in barrel racing ($5,777)
QUICK DRAW
Clay Smith/Coleby Payne’s 3.6-second run in Bracket 3, Round 3 was the fastest of the rodeo by three tenths and their third time of 3.8 or faster in the last week. All four saddle bronc riders that advanced out of Bracket 3 – Layton Green, Statler Wright, Wyatt Casper, and Kolby Wanchuk – made the NFR in either 2023 or 2024. Ty Harris and Kyle Lucas both made over $6,000, making them the second and third tie-down ropers to do so in San Antonio this year. Harris won Rounds 1 and 3 with an 8.2 and a 7.9, while Lucas won Round 2 with a 7.6. Bareback rider Richmond Champion made three straight rides of 83.5 or better and finished first or second in all three rounds.RESULTS
