Stetson Wright’s Big Bull Riding Performance Headlines Bracket 1 in San Antonio

If there’s anyone who could return from a year-long injury layoff and not miss a beat, it’s eight-time World Champion Stetson Wright.

Still, there were plenty of uncertainties. The extended absence was one factor, but the last time we saw him—at the 2023 NFR—he was clearly in excruciating pain as he attempted to compete in Rounds 1 and 2. His emotional embrace with his father after realizing he couldn’t continue, despite a record-setting regular season, was one of the most raw and heartbreaking moments in recent rodeo history.

Given all of that, it would have been reasonable to expect some struggles in Wright’s return. However, he made it clear he wouldn’t come back until he was at full strength. After a year of rehabilitation, TV commentary, and cheering on his NFR-qualifying brothers, Wright has reentered ProRodeo in a way only a man dubbed “Superman in Boots” could.

With a flawless 3-for-3 performance in Bracket 1 of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, earning nearly $9,000, Wright is surging up the PRCA World Standings. He’s also opened 2025 with eight consecutive qualified rides—an almost unheard-of feat at some of the toughest rodeos in the world. And he’s doing it all with his trademark style and swagger, sending a clear message: I’m back.

QUICK DRAW

Shad Mayfield has won his Semifinal and the Final two straight years. Tuf Cooper won the final two rounds with two 7.9-second runs. It is his third Semifinal appearance in San Antonio in the last four years.

Jake Dunham was close to Stetson Wright in the bull riding. He won Round 1 and shared Round 3 with Stetson with rides of 86 and 87 points.

Saddle bronc riding was the only event where three cowboys won at least $4,000. That was the three round winners – Coleman Shallbetter ($4,727), Jesse Kruse ($4,465) and Ryder Wright ($4,202).

Tucker Allen won the first two rounds in the steer wrestling and was the only one to place in all three rounds.

Other athletes who won a check in all three rounds were Jeff Flenniken/Buddy Hawkins in team roping, Tuf Cooper in tie-down roping, Tillar King in barrel racing, and Stetson Wright in bull riding.
